Edvige Calza

Edvige Calza (1892 – 1984) was born in Ancona, a city where her father had moved for military duties, as he was dedicated to suppressing post-unification banditry. Edvige was the younger sister of Bianca Calza, a painter who continued the legacy of their two ancestors, painters Ubaldo and Gaetano Gandolfi. The sisters grew up in a bourgeois family from Medicina (BO), where traces of their heritage can still be found. Early on, the Calza couple noticed their daughters’ artistic inclinations: Bianca for painting and Edvige for music. Edvige soon began to focus on studying the piano and authored several treatises on the instrument. She remained in contact with musicians of her time, as evidenced by a letter to Casella from 1941 (Fondazione Cini).

She authored the following treatises:
• Chopin, Fryderyk Franciszek; Calza, Edvige
Literary Interpretation of Chopin’s Preludes Attributed to Liszt: Facsimile of the Manuscript Presented / Edited by Edvige Calza
A Manuscript by Chopin: His Notes for Compiling a Piano Study Method / Commentary on the Interpretation Given by A. Cortot in Transcribing and Publishing it by Edvige Calza
And the three volumes of study:
• Edvige Calza: Method for Studying the Piano; Musical Pieces by Enzo Masetti; Reduction of Ancient Italian Music by Balilla Pratella Vol. I-II-III.
